SINK thy hand into this glorious
fire and return to the sure
recess of pure fire,
and in the first flame
forget thy names, forget thy world.
Fire calls for spirit,
fire calls for earth.
Oh sweet, ancient, lucid, speechless,
and nevertheless, the understanding
of the Earth lost in herself!
Oh rich kingdom sustained
in the very tongue of fire,
riverbanks of wine and of – ah, blood!
Oh delicious flight with the breath
of this blazing wind and of the flesh’s
winged work upon the Earth!
Leave thy heart in this glorious
fire, leave thy hidden memory,
and in the rising, burning heat
regain the freshness
of innocent wonder, glee on the sphere.
Fire is in the soul,
by fire lives the star.
Now it unleashes us from the seafoam
into the night – unbounded unseen sight –
the music of fire conquers
and in its igneous triumph
fall its ashes through the air
down to water’s gloomy repose.
